There is more to building wealth than finding the right investment.

Servicing is Important

Every year the team contacts our clients to set up a telephone review meeting to ensure that they have all of their CIBC Wood Gundy tax receipts before they submit to their accountant. We do this so that their interaction with their tax accountant is efficient, and to ensure tax returns are not filed prior to receiving all slips.

Taxation can be very complex, so we are proactive in liaising with our clients’ tax professionals to simplify the process and to give our clients peace of mind.

Tax efficiency is our first priority, so it is important to us to build strong relationships with our clients’ tax professionals. Our clients know we work closely with them to ensure their finances are well taken care of.

Some of the strategies we implement for our clients are:

  • "Topping up to bracket" with registered income
  • Being mindful of OAS clawback threshold
  • Advising as to when to start drawing on CPP
  • Depleting registered assets in a tax-effective manner before death of the second spouse
  • Ensuring that investment fees are tax-deductible where possible
  • Setting up spousal loans at government prescribed rates
  • Being mindful of sources of investment income (interest, dividends, capital gains)
  • Requesting that clients provide us with their Notice of Assessment annually to break down all sources of income and look at five year comparables
  • Taking advantage of tax-loss selling at end of year (carry-back three years, forward indefinitely)
  • Adding to RSP but not using receipt if in low tax year, defer until in higher marginal tax rate
  • Carefully examining client CPP statements to confirm they are due to receive the correct amount
  • Ensuring that clients are not adding to RESPs if they have already received the full lifetime grant
  • Implementing life insurance strategies

Real Life Examples:

Upon reviewing a client’s Notice of Assessment, it appeared that they did not take advantage of all of the deductions they were entitled to (carrying charges, to be specific). We determined that the client had not been utilizing the “Fees Paid” statement that was provided to them annually at tax time. Further investigation (looking at five year comparable tax summary) revealed that this had been the case for many years. We referred a qualified accountant to the client, provided the fee summaries for past years, and they were able to refile and obtain a $17,000 refund.

It appeared that a client had not taken full advantage of income splitting opportunities available to them and their spouse. This was discovered upon review of their notice of assessment. The married couple were using separate accountants and were not aware of this benefit. We referred them to a qualified accountant who refiled their taxes, optimally split their income, and saved them thousands of dollars.

A couple were concerned about their OAS being clawed back. It was determined that they were not invested in portfolios where the fees were tax-deductible, rather, the fees were embedded in their investment holdings. They moved their accounts to CIBC Wood Gundy, where their investment management fees are tax deductible. These deductions eliminated any OAS clawback.
